Mandolin Maintenance: The Basics

Strings

  • Regularly wipe your mandolin strings with a soft microfiber cloth and a small amount of oil. This keeps them lubricated, allowing for smoother playability.

  • Avoid tuning your mandolin excessively high, as it can strain and potentially damage the strings.

  • After each use, clean the strings with a soft cotton cloth to remove sweat and oil transferred from your fingers.

  • To maintain the best sound quality, replace the strings periodically.

  • If you won't be playing the mandolin regularly, reduce the tension by about three-half tones.

Wood

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth to clean the wood, ensuring the removal of dust and maintaining its shine. For hard-to-reach areas like under the bridge, a soft bristle brush can be useful.

  • Periodically polish the instrument to provide a protective layer for the wood. Choose a non-smear wax-free polish for this purpose.

  • To remove finger or body stains from the metal hardware, use gentle cleaning methods and avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the plating.

Traveling

  • A padded gig bag to transport the instrument to and from a jam session or a club may be enough. However, you must always remember that your instrument can still be damaged if you don’t take extreme care of how you handle it, how you put it down, and where you leave it. We recommend you use a hard-shell case to ensure your mandolin stays in excellent condition and is ready to perform.

  • If your mandolin has been exposed to extreme cold or heat, allow it to acclimatize gradually by leaving it in the case before taking it out in a different temperature environment.

Storing

  • Maintain an average temperature for your mandolin, keeping it away from heaters, air conditioners, and open windows, as temperature fluctuations can affect its tuning stability.

  • Protect the wood and preserve the integrity of the joints by keeping the instrument away from direct sunlight.

  • To combat excess moisture in humid environments, consider using silica gel inside the mandolin case.

Remember, proper maintenance and care will help your mandolin serve you well for many years, providing you with joy and beautiful music.
